Do none of the "Additional Tab Settings" in Prefs > Tabs suit? I always go  
for maximised tabs so have not experimented.

Right click on a tab and click Restore?

I so rarely cascade or tile that I'll pass on this.

Additional Tab Settings has a tick-box to force NewTab to open a new  
window but I don't know of an option to make NewWindow act as new tab.
