Thanks Liviu. I ended up going to the forums yesterday to see what the overall consensus was. It's clearly a risk to jump to 9.5 right now, but the majority of complaints seemed to be minor and I'm a rather lucky guy when it comes to computers so I went ahead and did the upgrade anyway.
Opera 9.5 on Mac OS X 10.5.3 does not seem to be giving me any trouble at all, although I can't attest to whether it is any lighter on resources than 9.27. It converted all of my 13,000+ email messages within a minute or two and everything seems to be accessible. It removed all of my newsfeeds' custom icons (customed by the feed itself), but that's relatively minor. Unless you have a good backup system and know how to restore both mail and the program (on OSX, Opera's mail directory is located in a library folder - I presume this is the same on Linux), and you don't have Opera set to delete mail as it downloads it, I wouldn't recommend upgrading right this instant unless one of 9.5's new features is something you're absolutely dying for. That's the advice I've passed along to family members who use Opera as a browser and mail client.
