What are your cache settings in Preferences->Advanced:History? Automatic?
If that's the case, perhaps it would help if you set a specified amount of
MB - automatic eats quite a lot of the available resources, I believe.

You could also try setting site specific javascript off, and/or site
specific plugins off, like flash. Some sites have frightening amounts of
javascript, and some flash applications are wrongly coded so that they eat
all resources.
