A more convenient alternative to re-starting Opera may be to just open the mail account preferences and close it again. I.e. "Tools > Mail and chat accounts", double-click the account you have problems with, OK your way out. This should "reset" the state of the account.
I don't have a bug reference right now but I think this problem has been fixed. 9.02 is slightly old now, I don't remember if it has been fixed in 9.26 but I'm fairly certain the fix will be in 9.50. I suggest you upgrade to 9.26 for other reasons such as bug fixes and security patches that have gone in since 9.02.
