In windows, anyway, you can make the list view taller at the expense fo  
the height of the message view merely by grabbing the divider with the  
mouse and dragging it. :-)

Right-click on the bar that has "the Status, From, Subject, and others" on  
it and you can select (or deselect) what you'd like to show. I'm assuming  
 from your message that's what you're referring to. :-)
