Hmm, it seems that way...

If I may, I'd like to offer some slight suggestions to what you're trying to do. Using gmail for archiving and IMAP is probably one of the more efficient methods you could use (although privacy advocates would likely disagree), but archiving your mail should be relatively easy, as Opera stores each message in .mbs format. You should be able to easily re-import these back into Opera, but the added benefit is that these files can be opened with plaintext editors for viewing as well, so you know you'll always be able to access your messages :) I don't know how much mail you have, but I'd imagine that most of us could probably back it up to a DVD or a few external HDs.

The IMAP is a bit trickier. I like the idea of IMAP a lot, but dislike how it doesn't permanantly store messages on your system. If you're technically inclined and have some time as well as a spare system, you could set up a home computer to receive your regular email and then act as an IMAP server to your other systems. To a person like me it's new territory, and I foresee it taking some time to get working right. It's an idea I have the future.

If you're set on going with Google, the next best thing I can recommend is to use a macro program to perform the function of select message > press redirect > type in address > send > delete > select message and so on.

Hopefully someone else can provide something more useful for you. Otherwise, I hope that I was able to help you out at least a little.

Regards,
David
