If you "middle click" a link, you will indeed get the behaviour you
describe and Opera will open the link "in a background tab". If you
"left click" a link, Opera should open the link "in new tab" and
switch the focus to this newly opened tab. If you are still unsure,
easiest is to "right click" the link and select the needed action.
