Do you have an input method running (e.g. scim)? There used to be a
mismatch between scim and X11 that would cause all key input to get
blocked in some cases (when a window popped up while typing). I thought
that was fixed a while ago, though.
I think opera has a debug command line switch to print out all the key
events it receives as well (-debug-keys, maybe? -help should list
it...). That should indicate whether it is the system or opera that
drops the events.
