Well good to hear that mplayerplug-in is working as well. Personally I
had not tried it.
The missing features of gmp I believe are the TV support (not something
most people use unless they are doing custom work) and I have heard of
only one team using it, the Copy URL function (which I should be adding
shortly) and some of the fine grained customization of what mimetypes
are enabled. Other than that I believe they are functionally equivalent.
gmp exceeds mplayerplug-in in the following areas: ASX parsing, GUI
integration, less CPU usage in some cases, auto pause functionality
(useful if you are on a slow connection).
