Oh, good to know I am not the only one who suffers from this...
I am not sure when it happened, but most probably between 9.10 and 9.20.
Everything in GUI has become extremely slow - so badly, that sometimes even
some keyboard input is lost while I enter the address...

When I switch between tabs using "1" and "2" keys, it takes about half
second (and this is OK), but the tabs over the address bar change with some
over 1sec. delay. Also, closing a tab takes ages... When I want to quickly
close several tabs, by pressing 2,ctrl+w,2,ctrl+w etc. - I very often close
too few/too many tabs because of these delays.

I am working on AMD Sempron 2800+ with 2GBytes of RAM, the machine load is
very close to 0...

To be honest, opera 9.20 works as if it was a debug version instead of
"release"...
