That particular setting disables all "standard" X fonts.

Since that worked, it means that opera for some reason felt that the
"standard" X fonts were better than the available xft fonts.  Which is
rather strange.  There's basically two cases where this is sort of
expected behaviour: cjk (chinese, japanese, korean) pages and when
specific fonts are requested, which only exist as "standard" X fonts.

To illustrate the second case: If the page asks for "helvetica", and
you have a "standard" X font named "helvetica", but no xft font by
that name.  Then we would most likely use the "standard" X font.
Possibly the font settings in opera preferences is set to such a font?
