Do you by any chance have a 2.6.9 or newer linux kernel?

If so it's a known bug.

Try turning on Synchronous DNS.

This option is unfortunately no longer available in the new
preference dialog, but adding

[Performance]
Synchronous DNS Lookup=1

to your .opera/opera6.ini should help. If you already have a [Performance]
section in there (quite likely), just add the Synchronous DNS Lookup=1  
option
to it (or replace =0 with =1 if you have that line).
